ആയുധങ്ങളുടെ കലമ്പലും കാഹളനാദവുമൊക്കെയായി;
അയാളെത്തിയതു പക്ഷേ, നിശ്ശബ്ദപാദനായിട്ടായിരുന്നു,
അവളതു കേട്ടതു തന്നെയില്ല.
വധുവിന്റെ കൈ പിടിക്കാൻ കുതിരപ്പുറത്തു വരുമ്പോൾ
വെയിലേറ്റയാളുടെ പടച്ചട്ടയെരിയുമെന്നവളോർത്തിരുന്നു;
ആസന്നരാത്രിയുടെ മങ്ങിയ വെളിച്ചത്തിൽ പക്ഷേ,
അവളയാളെ തനിക്കരികിൽ കണ്ടെത്തുകയായിരുന്നു.
ആ വിചിത്രവും ധീരവുമായ കണ്ണുകളൊന്നു നോക്കുമ്പോൾ
ഹൃദയമൊരാകസ്മികദീപ്തിയിലേക്കുണരുന്നതവൾ സ്വപ്നം കണ്ടു;
അയാളുടെ മുഖത്തവൾ കണ്ടതു പക്ഷേ,
ദീർഘസൗഹൃദത്തിന്റെ പരിചിതവെളിച്ചമായിരുന്നു.
കൊടുങ്കാറ്റിന്റെ പ്രചണ്ഡതയിൽ കടലിളകിമറിയുമ്പോലെ
അയാളുടെ വരവു തന്റെ ഹൃദയമിളക്കുമെന്നവൾ സ്വപ്നം കണ്ടിരുന്നു;
അയാളവൾക്കു കൊണ്ടുവന്നതു സ്വർഗ്ഗീയശാന്തിയുടെ ലേപനമായിരുന്നു,
അവളുടെ ജീവിതത്തെ മകുടം ചൂടിച്ച ഒരു സ്വസ്ഥതയും.

She had looked for his coming as warriors come,
With the clash of arms and the bugle's call;
